On occasion breeds in Altai and Western Tien Shan. On migration and wintering occurs almost everywhere. Please see detailed distribution in section Subspecies.


Rare resident on the migrations and wintering occurs widely but is rare overall. Inhabits the deciduous forests, gardens (apple, cherry-plum, walnut) and vineyards near the villages. On migration occurs in riparian forests, shelterbelts, groves and gardens. In Altai fledgling with female were recorded in May 31, 1970. Autumn migration of birds of nominate subspecies (singly or in small flocks) begins in second half of August, but in some years in September or even in October. In spring migrates in March - April, latest birds were observed in April - May (in Almaty in May 18, 1962). In end of April birds of subspecies humii observed in pairs. Female begins to lay eggs in second half of May. Juvenile was shot in August 18, the moulting bird was collect in October. No other data.

    Description. Head and top upper tail coverts are brown-buff, the mantle and upper lesser wing coverts dark-chestnut. Grey colour on upper back, white colour on belly, around of black throat spot developed less than in humii. Underparts are vinous greyish-brownish.
    Distribution. Occasionally breeds in Western Altai, where on Ubinskiy ridge fledgling observed in 1971, broods recorded at Ridder and near Ust-Kamenogorsk, and birds building the nest observed 2 May 1982 near Buran village in Chernyy Irtysh valley. It observed twice in mid-June on Markakol lake. On migration occurs almost everywhere in Kazakhstan, from Volga-Ural area, where common in Ural valley, and Mangyshlak eastward to Irtysh valley between Pavlodar and Ust-Kamenogorsk, on Markakol lake in Altai, in lower current of Ile river, Almaty, at Zlikha at lower Sarysu river adult bird caught 9 August 1986 and young one 19 September 1982, in Syrdarya valley, in foothills of Talasskiy Alatau, in Shymkent and Tashkent.

Coccothraustes coccothraustes humii (Sharpe, 1886)

    Description. Head, back, upper tail coverts, breast and sides are buffy-yellowish. Grey colour on upper back, white colour on belly, around of black throat spot and on upper greater wing coverts distributed more widely than in coccothraustes. Longest upper tail coverts are buffy. Underparts are rusty-yellow.
    Distribution. Breeds in Western Tien Shan, in lower valleys of Pskem and Ugam rivers. The scales of autumn-winter dispersal not investigated.
