The upperparts are more or less grey tinged. The grey tinge on the crown and nape distinctly contrasts the brownish-buffy rear-mantle, rump and upperwing coverts.
Breeds in Tien Shan (Zailiyskiy, Kungey, Terskey Alatau, Ketmen ridges; since 1960 occasionally Talasskiy Alatau), Dzhungarskiy Alatau, Tarbagatay, and Saur (where 13-28 August 1991 was common). On wandering and wintering recorded in Zaysan depression (at Saur foothills), Ile valley up to delta, in Chu-Iliyskiye Mts., Talasskiy Alatau and its foothills, in particular at Chokpak Pass.
