Distribution

Inhabits forests of northern Kazakhstan from Trans-Ural area eastward to Altai, and also in mountain forests of Tien Shan and Dzhungar Alatau. Please see the detailed distribution in the section Subspesies.

Biology

Common, in some places rare resident. Inhabits the old deciduous, mixed and coniferous forests on plains and in mountains at altitudes up to 2600 m. On dispersing occurs in gardens, shelterbelts and very rare in open treeless landscape with bushes only. Breeds in separate pairs in tree holes (asp, willow, birch, pine or spruce) at height 2-20 m above the ground. Clutch of 5-7 eggs is laid in end of April to late May. Female incubates clutch for 13-14 days. Both parents feed juveniles which fledge in end June – late July.

Subspecies

Dendrocopos major major (Linnaeus, 1758)

    Description. On PM 4-6 the white bands on outer webs not broader or slightly broader than black ones. Bill is strong. thick and broad. Males wing length 136-148 (143) mm.
    Distribution. Breeds in northern regions of Kazakhstan from Ural valley eastward to Trans-Irtysh area near Pavlodar, Shortandy area, Kazakh Upland and Zaysan depression, and also in Southwest Altai and Kalbinskiy Altai, in Naurzum Reserve. In Mugodzary ridge (Urkach forest) recorded 12 and 23 June 2003. On dispersing occurs in Kurgaldzhino 25 November 1969, 18 August 1971, 8-11 May 1972.

Dendrocopos major tianschanicus (Buturlin, 1910)

    Description. On PM 4-6 primaries the white bands on outer webs considerably, almost double broader than black ones; on secondaries white bands not narrower than black ones. Bill is less, weaker and thinner than major. Wing length 139-144 (141) mm.
    Distribution. Breeds in Dzhungar Alatau, Eastern Tien Shan and Zailiyskiy Alatau ridge. Near Bolshoye Almatinskoye lake juveniles collected 26 July 1971 and 17 August 1975. Since 1999 occurs in Ucharal (Alakol depression) where a brood recorded 27 June 2002. On dispersion occurs in Almaty regularly, in Bortagoy grove (2 March 1961) and on Chokpak Pass where male was ringed at 5 May 2005.
