Sorbulak, the last birding of year.

2020-12-22 | Askar Isabekov

Trip to Sorbulak together with Gennady Dyakin. It's quite a cold (about -10C in the morning), misty, but windless. There are mist on the water everywhere, the trees and bushes are frosted over (also known as 'winter tale'), but snow still not too much. Today is shortest day of the year. Considering birding with Gennady always is from sunrise until sunset, it means today is shortest birding of the year together with Gennady Dyakin.Actually the Sorbulak lakes today is just little open water in the mouthes of channels. In The Big Sorbulak open water is about 200 m in lenght, the wide is difficulut to understand but less than lenght in my opinion. Usually in winter time we reach the mouth of channel from the north, but today we first time did it from the southern coast. We aslo first time in history approached to Ducks by ice, commonly we just look them from the coast. Open water was undeer the mist, light was a few (we get the point almost right at 10 am), birds in water were almost invisible. [...... read more ]

rare birds records

Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis)

© Malik Nukusbekov

The first photo Clangula hyemalis from the south of Kazakhstan on birds.kz. In general, a rare record. The last known finds date back to the 20th century.

White's Thrush (Zoothera dauma)

© Serg Silan

A rare record for the Kazakh part of Altai. In total, three summer finds of Zoothera varia are known, concentrated on the Ivanovsky and Tigiretsky ridges: a singing male on June 13, 2003 (Panov, Karpov 2003), a juvenile on July 7, 2019, and a young bird on August 7, 2020 (Bolbotov 2020), and only one autumn - September 19, 2010 in Ust-Kamenogorsk (Loginova, Loginov 2011). The next record on May 9, 2021 on the southern slope of the Ulba ridge suggests that it is settling in the direction of the Bukhtarma Valley. (N.N.Berezovikov, written communication).

Levant Sparrowhawk (Accipiter brevipes)

© Alexandr Fedulin

The third record of the species for the Teniz-Korgaldzhinsky region and the first photographic record. Previously, observations in the Korgaldzhino village were known in May 2013 by the Dutch ornithologist F. Tis and on August 20 A. Kovalenko // Кошкин А.В. 2017.
